After the festive season almost everyone is feeling the pinch when it comes to finances. Here are 15 ways to make your money go further this year.
1. Watch less TV
By reducing the amount of TV you will save on electricity and you will not see advertisements that encourage you to spend. Plus you can spend the spare time to be more productive.
2. Be energy efficient
Use energy saving light bulbs, turn everything off at the power points, don’t leave your computer or TV on all night and use your air conditional frugally.
3. Save water
Have short showers, use water efficient shower heads and use grey water in the garden.
4. Avoid unnecessary outings
If you want to catch up with friends why not invite them over and tell them to bring a plate instead of going to an expensive restaurant.
5. Cash only
Make yourself a cash only advocate, go to the shops with only cash and leave your credit cards and Eftpos cards at home.
6. Drink water
Drink water instead of buying expensive juice, cordial or soft drink, your body and wallet will thank you for it.
7. Borrow and share don’t buy
Borrow household and garden appliances from friends or neighbours
8. Cheaper isn’t always better
Buy reliable items that are good quality, if something is better quality it will last longer and you will not have to replace it as often.
9. Go for a run
Run instead of paying for an expensive gym membership, you can do your own core exercises with just a matt in your home. There are thousands of exercise videos online to help you out.
10. Write it down
Take a notebook and write everything your purchase down, you will notice the smaller money wasting items and avoid them next time.
11. Make a list
Make a list of what you need and stick to it.
12. Make your lunch at home
If you make your own lunch you not only know exactly what is going into it, you won’t spend unnecessary funds on expensive fast food.
13. Get creative
Don’t spend a lot on money on entertaining the kids, try creative arts and crafts and imaginative games in the backyard or pool. Movies and theme parks are not necessary.
14. Buying staple clothes
When you buy clothing buy items that already go with at least two other things in your wardrobe.
15. Bare necessities
Cut one unnecessary thing out of your life per week –one week don’t drink coffee, the next don’t buy a lottery ticket. If you cut out just one thing for seven day you will be surprised at how much you can save.
