Devon Terrell — a 24-year-old actor from Perth that we can safely say you have never heard of before now — is the spitting image of the young POTUS.
Terrell — who was born in California, but moved to Perth at an early age and later studied at NIDA — stars as the young Barack Obama in Barry.
Directed by Vikram Gandhi, and co-starring Ashley Judd as Barack Obama’s mother, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as his girlfriend and Ellar Coltrone (Boyhood) and Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton) as his friends, Barry is a portrait of Obama’s college years.
Terrell’s voice isn’t quite as high as the President’s — which makes sense, since he’s playing him as a 20-year-old — but the cadence is there, and the physical resemblance is remarkable.
The Los Angeles Times has seen the film, and they say Terrell’s performance is like “watching archival footage” of a young Obama.
The rest of us will get a chance to see Barry on Friday 16 December when it debuts on Netflix.
