Things have changed a little bit — but not too much — since the days of the Movie World Studio Tour.
In this fun video from Wired, you’ll meet John Roesch, a foley artist — that is, someone who makes sound effects — on some of your favourite movies, including The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Inception, E.T. and Frozen.
John says there are actually “more astronauts in the world than foley artists”, a claim that sounds like it couldn’t possibly be true — but then, it is a pretty unusual job.
John works at a studio at Skywalker Sound; a specially built space that is not only acoustically perfect, it also includes a splash pool, and about a million odds and ends that pretty much nobody other than John would have any use for.
Of course, seeing John splashing around in his pool does somewhat ruin the illusion of, say, a sexy mermaid on film, but if you want to take a peek behind the curtain, this is a must-watch video. Check it out above!
