Congratulations to the newest Oscar nominee… Dick Poop! Wait, what?
Cinematographer Dick Pope was nominated for his work on Mr Turner, but when the nominations were announced this morning, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) president Cheryl Boone Isaacs pronounced his name as ‘Dick Poop’.
In an Oscar-worthy performance of his own, Isaacs’ co-host Chris Pine managed to keep a straight face despite the gaffe, which has naturally gone viral on social media today.
Dick Pope, a 67-year-old two-time nominee, has reacted to the gaffe with a sense of humour, telling USA Today: “You know what, I have been called a lot worse in my time.”
Pope said he has gotten quite a ribbing from friends and colleagues, but doesn’t know enough about social media to understand his newfound celebrity status.
“I feel sorry for the lady who made the mispronunciation,” he said. “I have never been on Twitter and I don’t know what trending means.
“I am completely naive. All I know is that I have a lot of emails here saying I am trending on Twitter. They might as well be saying I am landing on the moon, as far as I am concerned.”
