A foreign woman is dead and her travelling companion has life-threatening injuries after a double stabbing in a Brisbane hotel room.

The family of a foreign woman found stabbed to death in a Brisbane hotel room could be crucial to the investigation, police say.

The body of the 27-year-old was found at a hotel on Macgregor St at Upper Mount Gravatt at about 12.30am (AEST) on Tuesday.

A 31-year-old man, also a foreigner who was travelling with the woman, was found with stab wounds and rushed to hospital.

He is under police guard.

Detective Acting Inspector Tod Reid says it doesn’t appear that a third party was involved.

Police aren’t sure why the woman was killed and believe her distraught family overseas could shed light on that.

“We’re speaking with them at the moment to gather background as to why this incident happened,” Det Insp Reid told reporters.

Police aren’t sure when they’ll be able to interview the man.
