Brisbane is preparing to ‘Pass Go’, following today’s announcement that the River City will be getting its own official Monopoly board.

Naturally, the game will feature Brisbane’s iconic streets and landmarks in place of the traditional London locations, and locals will be consulted about the hot properties they’d like to see on the board.

Monopoly Brisbane Edition was announced at the Brisbane sign in South Bank this morning, where Lord Mayor Graham Quirk revealed his picks for the local landmarks he’d like to appear in the game.

“I’m nominating some of our destinations including The Storey Bridge, South Bank, Mt Coot-tha, the Shorncliffe Pier and City Hall, which are all iconic landmarks with strong connections to our community,” Cr Quirk said.

Cr Quirk added that he’d like to see South Bank in the prized Mayfair position, but didn’t want to pre-empt the voters’ decision.

“This is a chance for everyone to have their say on which of our Brisbane streets and landmarks should replace those famous London names like Fleet Street, Pall Mall and The Strand,” he said.

Winning Moves, manufacturers of the Brisbane edition of the board under license from Hasbro, intend to have the game on retail shelves from late October, in time for Christmas.

“We are looking forward to receiving input from Monopoly fans far and wide so that we can ensure that Brisbane Monopoly is a true reflection of all that we love about Brisbane,” Winning Moves managing director Reid Herbert said.

“The spirit and shape of this customised edition will remain the same as with the traditional game but now you will be able to buy and own your favourite Brisbane landmarks with Monopoly money.”

From today until 31 July, you can suggest Brisbane properties for the board at The most popular choices will be given the prestigious Mayfair and Park Lane positions on the board; there’ll also be other local twists and changes, including Brisbane-themed Community Chest and Chance playing cards.
