Two Hollywood blockbusters will film in Australia next year, with the Gold Coast understood to be the frontrunner as the filming location for Thor: Ragnarok.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Communications and the Arts Minister Mitch Fifield today announced that the latest entry in the Thor series, starring Aussie Chris Hemsworth, and Ridley Scott’s next Alien film will both begin production in Australia next year.
The films are expected to inject $300 million directly into Australia and generate 3000 jobs for locals, although it did take a $47.25 million Federal Government grant to persuade Marvel Studios and 21st Century Fox to come here.
Gold Coast MPs Steven Ciobo and Stuart Robert were also present at the announcement, a clear sign that at least one of the films is likely to be shot there. Last month, the Gold Coast Bulletin first reported that Thor: Ragnarok was likely to shoot at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast.
In a video message aired at the press conference, Hemsworth said he was “incredibly excited” to be filming Thor: Ragnarok in Australia.
“I look forward to introducing my Marvel friends to this beautiful country of ours,” the Avengers star said.
