Disney’s biannual fan event was on again in Anaheim this year and it brought with it a ton of exciting news.
From Star Wars to Finding Dory, this year’s D23 Expo had something for every Disney fan.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens cast appear on stage with director J.J. Abrams
John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Daisy Ridley and Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford joined Star Wars Episode VII director J.J. Abrams on stage at D23 to talk about the film and their love for all things Disney.
Disney has had a long history with the Star Wars franchise and Episode VII is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year.
Although they didn’t have any new footage to offer, getting to see Han Solo live on stage was obviously a real treat for the audience members.
New parks coming to Disneyland and Disney World
Walt Disney Chairman and President, Bob Iger announced plans for two Star Wars Lands at Disney World Orlando and Disneyland in Anaheim.
Iger revealed tantalising concept art and described in exciting detail all the attractions that will allow fans to fully immerse themselves in the Star Wars universe.
Iger promised unique and authentic experiences and took the audience’s breath away with the announcement that guests would be able take control of one of the most recognisable ships in the Star Wars universe, the Millennium Falcon in a customisable ride.
Disney is yet to reveal the expected opening dates for the new parks.
Phase Three of the Avengers series is on its way
Doctor Strange and Captain America: Civil War are the next two films in the lineup.
Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role. In the comic book universe, Doctor Strange is an arrogant neurosurgeon who loses ability in his hands in an accident, and in his search to have them restored becomes a guardian over Earth.
Next up was Captain America: Civil War. The premise of this third instalment of the Captain America series is that in trying to decide how best to handle situations that arise Captain America and Iron Man end up fighting each other.
Chris Evans and Anthoy Mackie, who plays Falcon, arrived on stage to promote the film.
Finding Dory is on its way
The much anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo will focus on Dory, the forgetful surgeonfish played by comedienne and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres. Ellen was on stage with the producer and directors of the film.
Also joining them on stage were co-stars Ed O’Neill and Ty Burrell from Modern Family and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Kaitlin Olson.
The film is due for release in 2016.
Toy Story turns 20 and Disney confirms Toy Story 4 is a go
Toy Story series director and Chief Creative Officer for Pixar, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Disney Toon Studios, John Lasseter confirmed a fourth instalment of the series is under way.
He announced the film’s screenwriters are going to be Will McCormack and Parks and Recreations star Rashida Jones.
2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the original Toy Story film.
In celebration, Lasseter brought out legendary composer, Randy Newman to sing his Toy Story hit ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’.
To top off an already exciting segment the audience was treated to a dance number from some of the film series’ favourite characters.
Kristen Bell performs at Frozen FANdemonium
Kristen Bell, who starred as Princess Anna in Disney’s Frozen in 2013 was at the D23 Expo as part of the Frozen FANdemonium Musical Celebration.
Bell joined her character’s younger voice actors, Katie Lopez and Agatha Lee Monn on stage to sing ‘Do You Want to Build a Snowman’, much to the delight of the audience.
Disney makes its mark in the world of Jack and the Beanstalk
John Lasseter announced Disney’s version of Jack and the Beanstalk, titled Gigantic.
The film is being directed by Nathan Greno, who directed Disney’s hit Tangled.
Greno and Gigantic producer Dorothy McKim also announced the addition of Frozen song writing team, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who will be bringing their hit-making talent to the musical side of the production.
