Brisbane is set to celebrate the Story Bridge’s birthday in style.

On the 6 July 1940, after five years of construction, our now iconic Story Bridge opened to traffic for the first time.

Its cantilever construction was a feat for its day and is still marvelled by the thousands of tourists who visit Brisbane each year.  The bridge is instantly recognisable and one of the most identified icons of our New World City.

Now the Story Bridge is an integral part of our city’s daily life and carries nearly 100,000 vehicles every day.  It is also just one of three bridges worldwide that offer a unique adventure climb experience.

This year the Bridge turns 75 and Council is throwing an enormous birthday party to celebrate this great milestone.

The event will pay tribute to our much-loved icon and the significant contribution it has made to shaping Brisbane’s identity.

On Sunday 5 July Council will close the bridge to traffic and transform it into a unique outdoor festival.

Council is partnering with the Eat Street Markets to host this event, which will offer a street-stall style food and drink markets as well as live entertainment from 11am.

Across the full one kilometre length of the bridge there will be 80 food and beverage stalls, 20 food trucks and four entertainment stages.

Council is offering 60,000 free tickets to this unique experience, but get in quickly – its already proving very popular!

To attend the event, visitors will need to register via Council’s website.

Free shuttle buses will operate from the CBD to the Story Bridge, and access will also be available from the Holman Street terminal at Kangaroo Point.

For those not attending on the day, motorists will be able to use the Clem7 tunnel toll-free while the bridge is closed.  The Captain Cook Bridge will also be open for motorists.

This event will also raise funds for the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust, and I encourage attendees to make a gold coin donation when arriving at the event.

For more than 50 years, the Trust’s fundraising efforts have improved the wellbeing of the most marginalised, vulnerable members of the Brisbane community and every dollar that is donated to the trust is re-given.

I look forward to welcoming residents to this historic event celebrating the Story Bridge and displaying our community pride and generous spirit as members of Team Brisbane.
