Junky Comics will bring all of your comic book fantasies to life.

Vlada Edirippulige leads a double life.

By night, the 23-year-old is a founding member of local band Major Leagues. But by day, she’s pushing the magic and diversity of comic books to Brisbane by launching Junky Comics.

The store, which will officially throw open its doors to the public on Friday 10 April, promises to deliver mainstream comic favourites from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and Image Comics; independent works from publishers like Nobrow and Fantagraphics; and everything from ’60s feminist cartoons and graphic novels to art books, zines and literature.

The shop will double as a creative space for workshops, trivia nights and art exhibitions, with Junky Comics already signing a joint venture with local art initiative NOFUN, who will host a string of group exhibitions at the shop on a quarterly basis.

“I love how comics blend words and art together,” Edirippulige says. “My mum was also a big fan of them. Growing up we never had a TV and I much prefer to read. I lover super heroes but I would have to say Batman is my favourite. His story is everything you want in a comic — classic storytelling that’s both fun and darky depressing.”

Known for her work as Brisbane-based illustrator ‘Junky’, the comic book connoisseur launched the online version of Junky Comics at the tail end of 2014. The endeavour has proven to be so popular that the business has morphed into a brick-and-mortar store.

“The goal from the very start was always to open Junky Comics as a physical store,” she says. “I wanted to pool together a selection of great local and international publications that you may not otherwise be able to find in Brisbane and put them all under one roof, for both comic enthusiasts and for someone that might be picking up their first comic.”

Come along to the Junky Comics official opening (featuring Unpaid Interns, a Wes Anderson art show presented by NOFUN) on Friday 10 April at 83 Vulture Street West End. For more information visit junkycomicsbrisbane.com.
