97.3FM’s Robin Bailey and Classic Hits 4KQ’s Laurel Edwards posed for bmag’s special Mother’s Day feature, here’s what went on behind the scenes and how to get their looks.
As Mother’s Day fast approaches on 11 May bmag asked the two leading ladies of Brisbane radio — Robin Bailey from 97.3FM, Brisbane’s #1 station and Laurel Edwards from Brisbane’s #1 Commercial AM station 4KQ 693AM — to emulate photographer Jaime C. Moore’s work and select a photo of a strong woman close to them to recreate.
American photographer and mother Moore asked her 5-year-old daughter Emma to choose five amazing women that she would like to be photographed as, so bmag editor Helen Goltz asked Edwards and Bailey to do the same. Edwards posed as her mother Delcia Edwards and Bailey was photographed as her grandmother Florence James and the results were sublime.
Being the busy radio women Bailey and Edwards were both working the airwaves on the morning of their bmag photo-shoot, but were happy to be prepped and made-up while presenting their popular morning shows. Simonne Peall from Twisted Desire was on hand at the studio to create vintage glamour looks for Bailey and Edwards. The team at Twisted Desire are all about creating a relaxed haven coupled with a sophisticated salon experience and were more than happy to bring their expertise to the bmag shoot. Peall was eager to share all the tips and tricks behind these radio stars’ glam looks.
Get Robin’s look
Simonne: I used pale colours on the lid and blended very soft brown into the eye crease to bring out her eyes. I then did a very soft feather line of eyeliner and individual lashes. Then I finished with a deep red lip, first lining the lips and then filling them in for lasting colour. Robin’s hair was styled in typical 1940s pin curls. I used mouse to help hold the curls and then curled each section and sprayed with hairspray. I then pin-curled her whole head and let it set. The curls were then combed out and serum was added to help with the frizz. The hair was then pulled back into a soft bun.
Get Laurel’s look
Simonne: Laurel’s make-up was very bronzed with warm tones. I applied individual lashes and did very subtle small winged eye liner. The photo of Laurel’s mother that we recreated had very strong brows, so I pencilled in the shape, softening them to suit Laurel’s eye shape. I did a rose pink lipstick followed by a clear shiny gloss.I also contoured with bronzer and put some shimmer on her cheek bones and under the brow bone to finish off the look.
