From the producers of Cats and Spamalot comes Brisbane’s next musical moment, The Pirates of Penzance.
To celebrate QPAC’s 30th birthday in 2015, Harvest Rain will present an all-new production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved classic, The Pirates of Penzance.
The theater company launched the show in Brisbane last night, announcing that the show will run from 19 March 2015 to 22 March 2015 at the Concert Hall, QPAC.
As the show that opened the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in 1985, Pirates has had a long and successful history in Queensland, most notably when Simon Gallaher’s produced his multi-award winning production in the 90’s that went on to tour the nation and was seen by over 2 million people. Now, the pirates are back, this time with Simon Gallaher in the director’s chair, overseeing an all-new anniversary production!
Australian television personality Andrew O’Keefe will take on the iconic role of the Pirate King, direct from his star-turn as King Herod in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s recent arena production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Joining Andrew on stage will be musical theatre legend Nancye Hayes playing the role of Ruth. For a performer with such an illustrious list of credits to her name, it’s remarkable that this production will be the first time Nancye has ever tackled the work of Gilbert and Sullivan.
Thirty years ago when The Pirates of Penzance opened QPAC, the show starred a young Simon Gallaher as Frederic and a then unknown Marina Prior as Mabel. Harvest Rain’s Artistic Director Tim O’Connor said for this special 30th birthday production, Harvest Rain conducted an exhaustive search for two new young stars to fill Simon and Marina’s shoes.
“Simon and Marina set the bar very high way back in 1985, so we knew we had our work cut out for us in casting these roles,” says the pirates producer . “Harvest Rain has long been a place where young performers in Queensland start their careers, but finding the next Simon Gallaher and Marina Prior to play these iconic roles was certainly a daunting task.
“I’m delighted to say that we struck gold and found two young Queenslanders who are going to knock everybody’s socks off!”
The role of Mabel will be played by 24 year old Georgina Hopson, and the role of Frederic will be played by 21 year old Billy Bourchier, and for both young stars this will be their first professional engagement.
This updated production of everyone’s favorite musical comedy is an hilarious night at the theatre you can’t afford to miss!
