From Thursday 1 until Saturday 3 December witness one of the greatest operatic love stories of all time when Blue Roo Theatre Company and Opera Queensland present Orpheus and Eurydice at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.

This thrilling collaboration reunites the awe-inspiring Blue Roo ensemble with five of Opera Queensland’s leading singers in a brand new English translation of Gluck’s opera, accompanied by a live orchestra of outstanding local musicians.

The power of Gluck’s classic opera is the emotional journey of the shows characters, Orpheus, Eurydice and Cupid, as portrayed by Opera Queensland’s principal vocalists and the chorus of Nymphs, Shepherds, Furies, and Blessed Spirits, portrayed by the Blue Roo ensemble.

Blue Roo Theatre Company is a unique Brisbane arts organisation who create contemporary performances that are led by the artistry, experiences and imagination of the ensemble who live with diverse ability and impairment.

“Seeing the ensemble members perform together on stage alongside Opera Queensland’s artists is nothing short of amazing!” Says Clark Crystal, Blue Roo Theatre Company Artistic Director.

Orpheus and Eurydice features many of Blue Roo’s excellent artists, including the 2016 Jamie Carrigan Award Recipient, Emma Gordon-Smith. The award was created in 2014 in honour of the late Jamie Carrigan, an outstanding Blue Roo ensemble member who sadly passed away in July of the same year. The award celebrates current ensemble members and their passion for performance, as well as acknowledges their contribution and dedication to the Company.

Recipient Emma, is one of Blue Roo’s most versatile and passionate performers. As a triple threat, Emma’s enthusiasm for performance is evident on stage. See Emma do what she loves this December in Orpheus and Eurydice, her sixth production for Blue Roo at the Judy.

Emma and the Blue Roo cast embody the main characters in this latest work by portraying the story through gesture and physicality, heightening the effect of this deeply moving opera.

Orpheus and Eurydice is just one of the many ways in which Opera Queensland, Blue Roo Theatre Company and the Judith Wright Centre continue to redefine inclusive community engagement.

We look forward to welcoming you to the season and celebrating the International day of People with Disability on Saturday 3 December for the closing performance.
