Radio stars Chrissie Swan and Meshel Laurie have come out swinging over fitness expert Michelle Bridges’ claim that she’s never met a happy obese person.
Bridges, who stars as a trainer on The Biggest Loser, made the controversial claim on an episode of ABC’s Australian Story that aired on Monday night.
“It might be seen that I have this agenda on people who are overweight or people who are deemed fat,” Bridges said.
“Honestly, if you are happy where you are, more power to you. But I can tell you, I’m yet to meet someone who is morbidly obese and happy.”
Radio host Chrissie Swan took aim at the remarks on her Nova 100 radio show yesterday morning.
“Michelle Bridges last night on Australian Story said that she’s never met a happy fat person, and yet mysteriously I have met her many times,” she said.
“Hi, Michelle, if you are listening. Remember me? I’ve known you for years. We have met many, many times… You can take it back now. I’m happy.”
Swan’s co-host Jonathan Brown said that he sees “bigger people” as “jovial”, but Swan wasn’t having a bar of that, either.
“That is equally ridiculous,” she responded.
“All we are saying is you should not judge someone’s entire character by what they look like… Every fat person is not sad or trying to change themselves or jovial.”
Radio host Meshel Laurie also disputed Bridges’ comments, though she prefaced her remarks by telling listeners, “I’m not as outraged as you might think”.
“It tapped into something that happened with my son Louis and I yesterday,” she said.
“He’s six, he’s in grade one… He said to me, ‘Mummy, you’re fat’. I said, ‘Yeah… and that’s OK. I’m really happy. I’m a really happy person.’
“I meant it from the absolute pit of my soul. I’m such a lucky person. I’ve got two arms that work, two legs that work. A brain that’s sharp.
“My focus is always, I’ve actually got a perfect body. My body does everything you could ever ask for it to do. It had twins one time, it breathes properly.
“It is actually possible to be fat and happy, I promise you.”
Former Biggest Loser host Ajay Rochester has also weighed in, captioning an Instagram pic of her bare backside with the words “Michelle Bridges can kiss my fat happy ass!”
The post has already been removed by Instagram.
Rochester’s pic linked to a blog post, in which she accused Bridges of being “fat phobic”.
“Michelle is fat phobic because she probably has an eating disorder,” she wrote.
Rochester says that during her time working together on The Biggest Loser, Bridges would regularly “turn up to set at 4pm and boast she had done five classes and not eaten a thing like it was something she was proud of”.
