Welcome to the first entry in our Secondhand Secrets series, brought to you by bmag fashion writer and op-shop guru Hannah Klose. Here are some hidden spots in Brisbane where you can dress from head-to-toe for just $10.
Multiple Sclerosis Op Shop in Dutton Park
Tucked away on Grantham Street lies one of Brisbane’s best-kept secondhand secrets.
Jam packed full of quality clothing, shoes, accessories, bric-a-brac, manchester and small pieces of furniture, the Multiple Sclerosis Op Shop in Dutton Park is proof that good things come in small packages. All year round they offer a deal where you can fill-a-bag of clothing for $5, but if you don’t feel like a total shopping spree you can always just treat yourself to a garment from their $2 sale rack out the front.
For those planning on tying the knot, look no further for your perfect vintage wedding frock. The team at the MS Op shop are selling an exquisite, silk, floor-length vintage gown for $100. It’s in immaculate condition so be quick! I cleaned up while I was there recently, scoring a David Jones wool jacket, a pair of boyfriend jeans, a black blazer, a high-waisted skirt, a black silk LBD, loafers and a swag of accessories. So what was the damage? The total bill came to just $14!
The best part about shopping there, apart from all the incredible bargains, is that all funds raised go directly to those suffering with MS, who are living in the care facility behind the shop.
Staff member Simi started volunteering at the op shop six years ago, after her brother passed away from the condition.
“I just wanted to help those still battling with it,” she says. “All the money raised from this store help us to purchase rehabilitation equipment, as well as purchasing Christmas presents for all the patients in care.”

Preloved Boutique in Morningside
Another hot spot for thrifting is the Preloved Boutique around the corner from the Multiple Sclerosis Op Shop in Morningside, but you really have to be on your game to shop there as the store is only open for six hours a week!
It’s worth scheduling a visit in though. The opshop’s been open for seven years and is crammed full of vintage clothing, priced between $3 to $10, which is my kind of price range!

Salvos Family Store in Carina
While you’re on the east-side you should definitely pop into the Salvos Family Store in Carina. They have more special offers than you can poke a stick at. Spend some time filling up a bag of clothing for only $6, shop for some lovely linens for $2 and or spend that $2 on a bag or shoes. You could be kitted out from head to toe for just $10!
On the first Wednesday of each month they also host a boutique day, where they open up a room chocked full of the best of the best for $5 a piece. Make sure you mark that down in your diary so you don’t forget.
