First time mother Kimya, a Western Lowlands Gorilla, is enjoying important bonding time with her new baby, with the name, weight and sex of bub to be announced.

Kimya gave birth around 6:00pm on Saturday and is reportedly doing well without any human intervention.
She was up straight after giving birth (you go girl!) and attending to the new arrival with lots of cuddles. Kimya’s mate Otana was a little spooked by the baby at first, but now has a great interest in the addition to their family.
Keepers are hopeful that Kimya’s experience will be helpful to the other gorillas, and have their fingers crossed for more babies in the future.
Melbourne Zoo have begun working on a list of twelve names that will be put to the public for voting.
