Flying with your furry friends can now earn you reward points after the launch of Australia’s first frequent flyer program for pets.

“Virgin Australian flies almost 30,000 pets each year around Australia, and a large proportion are owned by Velocity members, so we know how important their companions are to them,” says Velocity Frequent Flyer Chief Executive Officer Neil Thompson.

“We are delighted to make their flying experience even more rewarding by unleashing Australia’s first frequent flyer program for pets, giving our members another truly unique way to to earn Points.”

Building on the existing system that allows family members to pool points and credits, Velocity members can now earn at least 300 points each time their cat or dog flies on a domestic flight.

To celebrate the launch, Velocity held a Facebook competition to find the new Pet Ambassador, a title that Pepper the Westie (West Highland White Terrier) took out despite fierce competition.

The response to the competition was so overwhelming that additional runner-up Top Dog and Top Cat prize categories, judged by celebrity vet Dr Chris Brown and Velocity CEO Neil Thompson, were announced a week out from the Pet Ambassador competition end date.
