A creative new shipping container city like no other has just opened up on the Gold Coast, featuring incredible night markets, micro restaurants, emerging fashion and live entertainment.
Night Quarter in Helensvale opened up a few weeks ago and has already become a massive hit with the public, as well as local business owners.
Open every Friday and Saturday night from 4pm until 10pm, it features over 120 speciality stores from food purveyors, local designers, musicians and craftspeople within a unique precinct constructed from upcycled shipping containers – much like the Eat Street Markets here in Brisbane, but bigger!
The venue is spilt up into several different streets: The Alley which is filled with jewellery, art and homewares; High Street featuring boutiques by emerging fashion designers; Tapas Street with an array of micro restaurants; Hawker Street filled with Asian inspired street foods and Side Street with edgy salons, barbers and beauty bars.
The concept was put together by Ian Van der Woude and Michelle Christoe whilst sitting in a piazza in Italy.
“The bazaars of Istanbul, the piazza in Italy, hawker streets in Asia and countries around the world have these great places to congregate, support merchants and share culture,” Ian says.
“NightQuarter will bring the energy, the discovery, the liveliness of these places to the Northern Gold Coast.”
With so much hype surrounding it, I decided to check out Night Quarter for myself! Here’s my list of some of the top things to do and see there.
Unique Vintage Jewellery
With a street full of fashion and jewellery, there is definitely no shortage of shiny treasures at Night Quarter – but this little shop had me hooked!
The store features an array of magical looking dream catchers, jewellery made from spoons, pendants, beaded jewellery and heaps more. I could have spent hours in there!
They also have these nifty bracelets and earrings with removable clip-in buttons, so you can change the colours and look of your jewellery whenever you want.
Ladies, if you’re after a new handbag Shed Leather’s container is the place to go! They have an array of unique leather handbags, purses, clutches and backpacks in a wide range of colours and patterns! And, they’re all 100% real leather!
And, don’t worry guys there’s something for you too, they also have satchels, men’s wallets and computer bags. Get shopping people!
The Paddock is Night Quarter’s unique performance space, featuring an array of live performances each weekend. It has an outdoor festival type feel, surrounded by hanging plants, artwork and installations.
It even has its own taco bar, so you can sit down and chill out to some tunes while you eat some great food.
If you’re a big meat eater you can’t go past Grumpi’s Smokehouse, featuring BBQ ribs and beef brisket smoked for 14 hours. Drool!
Team that with homemade coleslaw or potato salad, and an array of condiments and sauces and you’ve got yourself one hell of a meal!
If you like toffee apples you’ll love Sticky Dee’s because that’s exactly what they sell, lots and lots of toffee apples. But these aren’t just any old toffee apples; they’re covered in all sorts of delicious toppings like chocolate and caramel.
They even have different flavours like rocky road, cherry ripe, snickers and cookies and cream.
The best part about them though, is that they’re extremely easy to eat and not hard on your teeth at all!
World Famous Funnel Cakes
Another delicious dessert you have to try is the world famous funnel cakes!
If you don’t know what a funnel cake is, it’s a cake made of batter that is poured through a funnel into hot fat or oil and deep-fried until crispy. It is then topped with chocolate, ice cream, fruit or whatever you desire. Heaven on a plate!
But it’s not just the funnel cake you’ll get at this little food container, you’ll also get a show. The staff there, dance all night while making the cakes and even challenge customers to dance offs!
There is so much to do and see at Night Quarter, you’ll just have to check it out for yourself!
