The name, and fact that there is food on the premises, is where the similarities between past school tuckshops and this new swanky café end.
Rather than having a dodgy roller door and being tacked onto the admin block, The Tuckshop in Hendra is large, modern and cosy at the same time. Its polished wooden floors, rustic benches and open courtyard all works to create a light, airy feel that is more than inviting.
The Tuckshop serves up breakfast and lunch, with early morning offerings including an exotic masala-spiced omelette with tandoori paneer, buttered spinach and tomato kasundi.
There are also lighter options available as well such as house-made yoghurt, seasonal fruit compote and toasted granola.
We tried out the Canadian fluffy pancakes with banana, dates, maple syrup butter and crème fraiche. These were some of the fluffiest pancakes in town, and the tartness of the crème fraiche contrasted nicely with the sweet maple syrup slathered over the meal.
For lunch, The Tuckshop serves up fresh dishes such as spinach and ricotta gnocchi with tomato and basil salsa, as well as salt cod fritters with lemon aioli.
You can throw in a side of Greek village fries served with fetta and oregano as well.
For dessert, we like the dark chocolate rye brownie with hot chocolate and vanilla bean ice cream. The word “rye” almost turns this decadent treat into a health food.
There is also an abundance of house-made cakes on the front counter, as well as some freshly made savoury treats such as bacon, corn and cheddar muffins for anyone needing a bite on the run.
The Tuckshop makes as much as possible in house, including staples like breads and sauces.
