Wooloowin is 5km north of Brisbane CBD and was the main thoroughfare of the Windsor Shire between 1887 and 1925. The heritage-listed Holy Cross Laundry in Chalk Street is the remnant of the Magdalen Asylum opened in 1889 and operated by the Order of the Sisters of Mercy as a home for young women (often pregnant out of wedlock) and children. It ceased operating as a home in the 1970s.
