West End was named by early English settlers who found the area reminiscent of the West End of London. The suburb is bounded by the Brisbane River to the west and the south and has earned a bohemian reputation as students and academics have moved into the area, taking advantage of its proximity to the University of Queensland, Griffith University South Bank (including Queensland Conservatorium) and QUT. This has inspired the market culture that is ripe in the area, the latest addition to this culture is the Boundary Street Markets located in the heart of West End.
