Hawthorne started as a farming district in the 1860s and was gradually subdivided as Brisbane grew. Hawthorne has a number of heritage-listed sites, including Hawthorne Ferry Terminal & Hardcastle Park. The Hawthorne Cinema complex is also a classic theatre which opened in the 1940s. The suburb is located in the CBD.
