Much-loved English actor Roger Moore, who made a name for himself as a suave spy in The Saint before taking on the role of James Bond, has passed away. This is his story, as told by the legend himself.

Moore’s children have announced that their father has died at the age of 89 in Switzerland, “after a short but brave battle with cancer”.

Best known as an actor, Moore was also a noted humanitarian, devoting much of his time to his role as a Unicef goodwill ambassador.

The documentary embedded above, Roger Moore: A Matter of Class (released as part of The Hollywood Collection in the ’90s), tells the story of the actor’s journey from bit parts to 007, with recollections and reflections from Moore himself as well as friends and contemporaries like Gregory Peck, Michael Caine, Tony Curtis, Carroll Baker and Maud Adams.

Once you’ve watched that, broaden your knowledge of Moore with Movie Pilot‘s look at the actor’s six best roles outside the Bond franchise.

Moore is survived by his wife, Kristina Tholstrup, and his three children.
