The first new film in four years from the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz looks like it will deliver the goods.
Edgar Wright has built such a cult following and had such a ubiquitous influence since the release of Shaun of the Dead in 2004 that it’s hard to believe he’s only actually released four films.
The gap in Wright’s filmography is probably because he was supposed to direct Ant-Man in 2015, a project he ultimately walked away from after sinking years of his time into its development.
Finally, the wait for new material from Wright is over — he’s just dropped the trailer for Baby Driver, the story of a kid named Baby (Ansel Elgort) who works as a getaway driver for crime boss Doc (Kevin Spacey) and his crew.
Wright’s films have always been known for their perfect syncing of music and action, and in Baby Driver, he looks to have built an entire film around this — the story goes that Baby was in a car accident when he was a kid, so now, he constantly listens to music to drown out the ringing in his ears.
What does that mean for the film? It means we’re going to get a lot of cool car chases and a great soundtrack.
Baby Driver, starring Elgort, Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Lily James, Jon Bernthal and Eiza González, premiered at the SXSW festival to rave reviews on the weekend, but won’t pull into Australian cinemas until Thursday 10 August.
