If all goes to plan, actual reindeer will be delivering pizza in Japan for the holidays.

A test period for reindeer pizza delivery has gotten underway in the city of Ishikari in Hokkaido, in Northern Japan.

The tests are being overseen by animal trainers, and conducted on the grounds of a driving school.

The elaborate promotion is in service of the company’s GPS Drive Tracker, which lets customers follow their driver’s progress in real time. The idea is that, for these special reindeer deliveries in December, the car icons on the map will be replaced with reindeer.

Mashable reports that there is a practical advantage to employing reindeer to deliver pizza, in the sense that they can make it through heavy snow conditions that cars and bicycles can’t.

But there is also a practical disadvantage to employing reindeer to deliver pizza, in the sense that they are reindeer delivering pizza. Make no mistake, it is an insane idea.

But then, what would you expect from the country that’s preparing to give us the onsen rollercoaster?
