Ipswich is being talked about around the world today, but not for the reasons Mayor Paul Pisasale would like.
Ray and Lynn McKay woke up yesterday morning to discover a sinkhole in the backyard of their home on Coal Street. Throughout the day, the sinkhole grew to about 8 metres in diameter.
Mayor Paul Pisasale said the McKays spent a restless night at a hotel. He had breakfast with them this morning at a local café, before returning with them to their home, where they have also been visited by Dr Anthony Lynham, the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines.
ABC News reports that experts fear it could become much bigger. A burst water pipe has been ruled out as the cause of the sinkhole, with experts now turning their attention to a vertical mine shaft as the likely culprit.
In the meantime, the story has become an international sensation — the above video comes via the New York Times.
