Bye bye, Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur — there’s a new hack that allows you to start Pokemon Go with fan-favourite Pikachu by your side.
The Pokemon Go app has taken the world by storm since it was released last week, with its relatively innovative use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology forcing players to get out of the house and explore their surroundings to catch wild Pokemon.
But there’s one thing about the Augmented Reality (AR) game that’s a bit of a downer — you have to start the game with either Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur, and work your way up to the most popular Pokemon, Pikachu.
But it turns out you do have another option. Game Informer reports that you can start the game with Pikachu, just by waving the other guys away.
It’s a straightforward trick — when you start the game and Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle first appear, just walk away from them, rather than selecting them.
Once you’ve walked far enough away, they’ll respawn. Ignore them, and walk away again. You’ll do this once more.
But, on the fourth respawn, the three will bring another friend — Pikachu — with them when they respawn. Then you simply choose Pikachu, and enjoy the rest of the game with the cute little yellow monster by your side.
Watch the video above to see how it’s done.
It could take about 40 minutes of aimless wandering around to make the starter Pokemon disappear and respawn three times, but that’s still a much quicker path to scoring Pikachu than you’d be looking at if you settle for one of the first three Pokemon that come along.
Of course, if you’ve already started playing the game — and at this point, who hasn’t? — then this cheat won’t be much use to you, unless you delete the app and start again.
But hey, at least you can take solace in the fact that you’ll still capture Pikachu eventually — after all, the whole point of the game is to catch ’em all, right?
