A kayaker who sparked a search and rescue operation when his craft was found semi-submerged in far north Queensland has been found alive and well after swimming to shore.

Police held fears for the man’s safety after the waterlogged kayak was found with a fishing rod on board at Cleveland Bay near Townsville on Tuesday.

The man contacted police on Wednesday and told them he swam to shore after the kayak started sinking.
