The second round of the men’s world surfing tour event on the Gold Coast is set to resume after organisers gave the go-ahead.
Australia’s Bede Durbidge has been eliminated from the world surfing championship event on the Gold Coast.
The 31-year-old Queenslander, who finished fifth at last year’s Quiksilver Pro, was beaten by American Kolohe Andino in one of four second-round heats held on Tuesday morning at Snapper rocks.
Durbidge scored a 12.17 out of 20 in the heat but couldn’t overcome Andino’s 13.46 that sent the Hawaiian into the third round.
Other winners on Tuesday morning included Australia’s Adam Melling and Brazilian pair Jadson Andre and Miguel Pupo.
The completion of the second round means 11-time world champion Kelly Slater will take on Portugal’s Tiago Pires in the third round while local favourites Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson are set to face American wildcard Dane Reynolds and Australian tour rookie Dion Atkinson respectively.
Organisers have given the go-ahead for the second round of the women’s event to get underway, with Australian pair Sally Fitzgibbons and Stephanie Gilmore both battling to avoid elimination.
