Qantas CEO Alan Joyce says the Australian dollar remains too high, despite its recent fall to about 91 US cents.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce says the Australian dollar is still hurting the tourism sector despite its recent fall.

The currency has dropped from 97 US cents in October to levels closer to 91 US cents this week.

But Mr Joyce says the Australian dollar hasn’t fallen far enough.

“We still have too high an Australian dollar: it is killing the manufacturing sector, it is having an impact on the tourism sector,” he told a business lunch in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Mr Joyce also said the airline had experienced no boost in its business after the September federal election.

“Since the election, there hasn’t been,” he said.

“It’s still a very weak market.”
