Another election weekend is here, so it’s time to get out of your PJs, drive down to your local polling booth and wait in line to tick a few boxes. Let’s face it, the thing you’re really looking forward to on election day is the sausage sizzle — but do you know if your local polling booth will have one?
Luckily, we live in the age of the internet, where the guess work is taken out of everything — even sausage sizzles.
Run by Rosemary Walton, Stephen Downes, Gus Poskus and Grant Castner, Snagvotes tracks the location of sausage sizzles, cake stalls and other fundraising activities on election days, so you can find the most delicious place to vote this weekend.
Grant Castner, the creator of the Snagvotes map, says the site started way back in 2010 after a group of friends suggested it would be a good idea.
“I did some research and found out there was plenty of interest in it (a map) from other people on social media,” he says.
“We realised how important the election day sausage sizzle experience was to Australians and also for the schools and their fundraising.
“Since then, it has really taken off.”
Grant says the key to a great sausage sizzle is to keep it simple.
“When looking for a good sausage sizzle I like to keep it simple and basic; just a well cooked sausage on a bit of bread with some onion,” he says.
“I live on the Sunshine Coast and my local one at Buderim is pretty great. And if you’re further up north, Townsville South State School always puts on a big one.
“I find that a lot of schools put a lot of work into them these days, they are all pretty great.”
Grant hopes the election day stalls will encourage a higher voter turn-out.
“In the last elections there were a lot of people that actually didn’t vote, or they just did a postal vote,” he says.
“This is a great way to get together with your community and support your local school and grab something to eat on election day.”
So if you wake up on Saturday morning dreading the voting experience, just think of the sausage sizzle ahead!
