Our prayers have been answered! Facebook have announced they will be introducing a ‘thumbs down’ icon to the site – yes a ‘Dislike’ button.
Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement today at a Q&A session streamed live online from Facebook Headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif.
“I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it,” Zuckerberg said.
For years Facebook has resisted creating a ‘Dislike’ button as a companion to its ‘Like’ button, fearing it would become a Reddit-style system of upvoting and downvoting. But recently Zuckerburg has softened his stance.
“It’s important to give people more options than just ‘like’ to help express empathy and sympathy. Not every moment is a good moment,” he said
Facebook is close to unveiling the new button, but it’s unlikely to be called ‘dislike’.
Zuckerberg says it will mostly likely be a ‘sympathize’ button or there may be a series of buttons that convey support or solidarity or express similarly positive emotions.
