2014 was the year that Brisbane graduated to become an innovative new world city.

After successfully and safely hosting the most significant international convention in Australia’s history with the G20 Leaders’ Summit, Brisbane is well and truly on the world map both as an investment and major events destination.

In November last year the world watched on as Brisbane delivered a seamless G20 that saw up to 7000 world leaders, delegates and media descend on the city. We also delivered the first ever G20 social summit, the Global Café, which has delivered important recognition of our city’s wealth of intellectual capital.

The challenge now is to reset our economic development plan and continue to shape our New World City, to capitalise on the benefit of this world spotlight and harnessing the investment opportunities in the years to come.

All Brisbane residents will benefit from strong economic outcomes of hosting such a successful international forum, and already more than $100 million worth of high-profile events have been planned for Brisbane this year.

I’m committed to ensuring that the focus President Obama put on the quality of our educational institutions is utilised to increase the lucrative international student market. I’m equally committed to taking advantage of ever-increasing international reputation for hosting first-class world sporting and business events.

I have commissioned the business leaders of our city to work with me in developing an action plan which will guide our city’s economic future for coming years. This action plan will focus on empowering small and medium business to compete in a global economy and growing our technological capacity as well as delivering the infrastructure our city needs for the years to come.

By maximising the opportunity in front of us now, we will achieve our aim of doubling the size of the Brisbane economy in the next two decades and ensuring we have prosperous businesses and quality jobs for future generations.

Already since November Brisbane has hosted matches in the Asia Cup football, presented the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and cricket World Cup and Test matches with the Liverpool FC Match to come in July.

Throughout the year I look forward to seeing even more events in Brisbane that will have important economic benefits for the future of our city.
