The Australian Idol alumni is set to represent Australia as a wildcard entry in the 60th annual Eurovision Song Contest.
It’s official, Guy Sebastian is our Eurovision tribute.
The happy news was announced at a press conference staged at the Sydney Opera House this morning. Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang announced that SBS has chosen Australian Idol alumni Sebastian to represent Australia as a wildcard entry in the 60th annual Eurovision Song Contest, to be held this May in Vienna.
The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual song competition held among the member countries of the European Broadcasting Union since 1956. Each member country submits a song to be performed on live television and radio and then casts votes for the other countries’ songs to determine the most popular song in the competition.
The contest has been broadcast every year since its inauguration in 1956 and is one of the longest-running television programmes in the world.
Speaking to his choice of song (which can’t be a previously released single), Sebastian – who has just finished a national tour and once represented Australia in the first and last World Idol – said he wanted it to represent Australia.
“I want it to be epic,” he said. “I’m not trying to work around what my next single is going to be. I want it to represent our national well. I want it to be super fun or emotional, or a big ballad that showcases my voice. There are two songs in the running so far.”
