Brisbane is experiencing some wild weather. Here is everything you need to know about road closures, suspended parking, event cancellations and where to get support.
Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia, category 4, continues to move south and is expected to pass to the near west of Yeppoon during the next couple of hours. It is expected to continue a southerly movement through today while slowly weakening. Brisbane residents will face winds easterly 20 to 30 km/h turning northeasterly 25 to 35 km/h and heavy rainfall.
Event cancellations
- Brisbane City Council has advised that tonight’s Chinese Lunar New Year activities in Chinatown Mall have been cancelled due to bad weather. However, the activities planned for Saturday 21 February and Sunday 22 February are still scheduled to go ahead.
- Tonight’s Brisbane Roar match against Melbourne Victory at Suncorp Stadium has been postponed. Football Federation Australia made the decision after advice from the State Government and emergency authorities including Queensland Police and the Bureau of Meteorology.
- Brisbane Twilight Markets have been cancelled due to the bad weather.
Where to get sandbags
Sandbags are currently available from the following locations:
- Zillmere Depot, 33 Jennings Street
- South Depot, 48 Shamrock Rd
- Darra Balmoral Depot, Redfern Street
- Morningside Herbert Street, Lota SES Depot
- Wilston Rd, Newmarket
Brisbane City Council is currently experiencing a high demand for sandbags across all depots and is advising that moderate wait times may be experienced.
This video, presented by Brisbane City Council’s Lord Mayor and SES officers, shows the best way to use sandbags to protect your property, where to acquire them, and how to make sandbags.
Suspended parking
Brisbane City Council has also advised that on street parking will be temporarily suspended on the following roads from 6am Thursday 19 February 2015.
- Northey Street Precinct, Windsor
- Butterfield Street, Herston
- Constance Street, Fortitude Valley
- Edmondstone Street, Bowen Hills
- Sandgate Road, Albion
These parking areas are low lying and are subject to inundation due to higher than usual high tides and severe weather. Council also advises that cars parked in some areas may be at risk from rising water levels.
Motorists are advised to display caution when driving on roads affected by any flood water. It is anticipated that the closure will continue until Saturday 21 February 2015, once the weather system has passed.
Affected areas will be signed with public safety notices. Existing parking restrictions in these areas will still apply.
