If you thought you felt the earth move overnight, you weren’t imagining things — two earthquakes struck the town of Eidsvold overnight and were felt as far south as the Darling Downs and as far north as Rockhampton.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit Eidsvold, located about 400 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, just before 2am (AEST).

A second quake, measuring magnitude 2.9, hit the same region roughly 45 minutes later.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) have not had any calls reporting damage yet, but Geoscience Australia senior seismologist Johnathon Bathgate told the ABC the aftershocks could continue for a few days.

“We can’t predict the magnitude or duration of the aftershocks but generally they become smaller and less frequent over time,” he said.

Mr Bathgate also refused to rule out another large earthquake hitting Queensland in coming days.

The quake was felt throughout South East Queensland, including Brisbane, prompting plenty of late-night social media chatter.
