Social media users who took selfies at Martin Place during Monday’s Sydney siege have been slammed as unfeeling and inappropriate. Unfortunately, they’re not the first ones to whip out their smart phones at the wrong moment.
The selfie, an act of turning the camera on yourself and snapping a pic, has taken over our society.
Not only was the term officially added to the dictionary this year, they also continue to flood our social media feeds.
While the run-of-the-mill poolside selfies are relatively harmless, the act of snapping a selfie during a traumatic moment or at a solemn location is one that continues to divide us.
Most commentators called the Martin Place selfies insensitive and unfeeling — on the other hand, an argument can be made that by taking them, the self-absorbed snappers proved that they weren’t afraid of the gunman and that, despite his best efforts, life goes on as usual. (Seriously, though, don’t take selfies outside a hostage situation. You’re better than that.)

What do you think about the shameful selfies? Will you be getting a selfie stick for Christmas? Let us know in the comments.
By publishing them you are giving the selfie takers the notoriety they want. Shame on you B mag.
really, so taking a selfie is shameful but getting someone else to take a shot of you in the same situation is ok. really, what difference does it make who holds the camera – are we becoming a “shutter button discriminatory” society now! i am sure other people took “family” shots at auschwits as well. sometimes inappropriate, yes, but offensive, No. go selfies, ban wowserism!
Selfies = unadulterated narcissism.
D: the urn one… I can’t deal.
