My vision for our city is one of access and inclusion — Brisbane should be a place for everyone and no one should feel isolated or left out, particularly at Christmas time.

One of the ways we are working towards this is through the Lord Mayor’s Annual Christmas Appeal which kicks off this week.

The banner is hanging proudly on the Story Bridge, reminding residents that the Appeal will again be working to raise funds for those less fortunate at Christmas time.

All donations from the Appeal go to the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust, which supports charities working in the fields of disability, homelessness, mental illness, ageing, domestic violence and addiction.

Christmas is a time of giving and this appeal provides our local corporate sector, community organisations and individuals with an opportunity to show Brisbane’s caring spirit and donate to assist those less fortunate.

The Appeal is designed to support Brisbane’s residents in need and make our city a better place to live.

All proceeds will be distributed to over 50 of Brisbane’s lower profile and underfunded charitable organisations prior to Christmas, in the form of financial grants, food vouchers and toys.

These organisations provide people with anything from emergency accommodation and financial assistance for people suffering hardship, to providing substance and crisis counselling, and health and education services.

They are grassroots charities who often fly under-the-radar, but make a real difference to Brisbane residents.

The Lord Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is a way the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust can acknowledge the tireless work of these organisations within our Brisbane and help them achieve their goals.

Due to the generosity of the Brisbane community donating to the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Appeal over the past 10 years, the Trust has raised over $801,000 to help make Christmas a special time for disadvantaged children and adults in our community.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has donated and supported the Trust this year – without your assistance we would not be able to give so generously.

This generosity has enabled the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust to donate cash grants, food vouchers and toys to help make Christmas just that little bit better for those in need.
