Brett Rankin has overcome a two shot deficit at the Royal Queensland Cup to win the 2014 bmag Week of Golf, while Sven Puymbroeck, Nick Russell and Ryan Haller added their names to a long list of historic champions of the Royal Queensland Cup.
Although finishing one behind the trio of winners at the Royal Queensland Cup, Rankin reaped the rewards of a consistent week, finishing the five round bmag Week of Golf at nine under par and finishing two shots ahead of Anthony Brown and Marcus Cain to claim the 500,000 frequent flyer points on offer.
Rankin, a Queenslander, was ecstatic with his win at the bmag Week of Golf, with the 500,000 Frequent Flyer points going a long way to assist him with gaining his Japan Tour Card over the coming months.
“The prize on offer this week is certainly something that everyone wants to win, and the timing could not be better for me at the moment with all the travelling I am doing to Japan in the attempt to secure my playing rights there next year.
“This is a significant win in my career and without the support of many, this achievement would not have been possible. I am really looking forward to the coming weeks and hopefully I can do bmag proud and secure my playing rights in Japan over the coming months for the 2015 season.”
In the shadows of Rankin’s win in the bmag Week of Golf, Nicholas Russell has recorded one of the rarest feats in golf on his way to claiming a share of the spoils in the Royal Queensland Cup.
Russell executed the perfect drive and the perfect three iron to the par five ninth hole to record an albatross on his way to a three under par 69. This is Russell’s second win of the Royal Queensland Cup in the past two years, while it was the first for both Haller and Royal Queensland Golf Club member Puymbroeck.
“It is great to again win at what is arguably one of the best tournaments played on the Queensland Sunshine Tour, a tournament that boasts so much history,” said Russell. “To win against one of the strongest fields to play all year is very pleasing and will no doubt give me plenty of confidence heading into business end of the season.”
Many of the professionals that contested this week’s bmag Week of Golf series will now head down the coast for the Northern River’s swing of events which gets underway on Sunday at Lismore.
