Ballerina Benedicte Bement is living every little girl’s dream, travelling the world clad in a shimmering tutu and sparkling tiara.
The native Gold Coast dancer has worked her way up through the ranks of The Australian Ballet Company for their Brisbane 2014 season, promoted to coryphée and was awarded the ‘People’s Choice Award’ in the 2013 Telstra Ballet Dancer Awards.
“I’ll be dancing in both of The Australian Ballet Company’s Brisbane shows, Imperial Suite and Manon. The costumes for both productions are amazing and both ballets tell beautiful stories,” she says. “It’s just as fun wearing the tutus as it looks.”
Before being accepted into the company’s elite ranks Bement’s dancing saw her travel to locations like New York City and Canada, but the 20-year-old admits the hours can be gruelling.
“Today I started at 9am with practice and then I went into class at 11.45am and then had a quick lunch break before going straight into rehearsals and I left around 7pm. That’s a typical day for me.
“You put your body through a lot of stress but it’s worth it, I love dancing and there are so many parts I’d love to dance one day. I want to be Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and Odette in Swan Lake.”
