Toruk – The First Flight, inspired by James Cameron’s box office juggernaut Avatar, will make its Australian debut at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
The show will come to Brisbane first, before heading to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
The show sees Cirque du Soleil apply its signature style to James Cameron’s imaginary world, with a fusion of cutting-edge visuals, puppetry and stagecraft, all set to a soaring cinematic score.
Narrated by a Na’vi storyteller, Toruk — The First Flight tells a mythical tale set thousands of years before the events show in Avatar, long before any human ever set foot on Pandora.
An ode to the Na’vi’s symbiotic co-existence with nature and their belief in the interconnectedness of all living things, Cameron’s stamp is all over Toruk — The First Flight, as well as those of directors and multimedia innovators Michael Lemieux and Victor Pilon.
James Cameron says the world of Avatar is a natural fit with Cirque du Soleil.
“Avatar is really meant to be a celebration of human motion and human emotion, and Cirque is able to capture that absolutely perfectly, because it’s all about human performance and physicality,” he says.
“It makes you feel alive to watch these performers.”
Director Michael Lemieux expects the show to strike a particularly strong chord with Australian audiences.
“Toruk — The First Flight is an integration of humanity and technology, a colourful spectacle for the entire family. We are delighted to see this epic journey take flight in Australia, a country so rich in culture and scenery, as can be found on Pandora,” he says.
