The musical phenomenon that is Mamma Mia! is on its way back to QPAC’s Lyric Theatre.
Over 60 million people around the world have seen Mamma Mia!, the endlessly popular musical set on a Greek island paradise and inspired by the storytelling of ABBA’s songs.
This new production of Mamma Mia! will visit Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide, and will be produced by Michael Coppel, Louise Withers and Linda Bewick.
“Mamma Mia! is exactly what we all need — an uplifting, fun-filled, heartfelt night at the theatre which puts a smile on your face and a spring in your step,” Withers says.
“The timeless tracks of ABBA never fail to bring joy to audiences across the world and we are delighted to be producing Mamma Mia! once again across Australia. We are also thrilled with the incredibly talented creative team and cast we have assembled to bring this story and these songs to life on stage night after night.”
Natalie O’Donnell will star as Donna Sheridan, the mother-of-the-bride. Natalie, who began her career in 1998 in the Australian production of Les Misérables, is coming full-circle with this production — in 2001, she starred as Sophie, the bride-to-be, in the original Australian production of Mamma Mia!
This time around, the role of Sophie will be played by emerging Australian actor Sarah Morrison (Ladies in Black).
The cast will also include Alicia Gardiner, another veteran of the original Australian season of Mamma Mia!, as Donna’s vivacious and loyal friend Rosie; Jayde Westaby (Dream Lover — The Bobby Darin Musical) as Tanya; Ian Stenlake (Sea Patrol) as Sam Carmichael; Phillip Lowe (Georgy Girl — The Seekers Musical) as Harry Bright; Josef Ber (Rush) as Bill Austin; and Stephen Mahy (The Rocky Horror Show) as Brad.
Monique Salle, Jessica Di Costa (White), Sam Hooper, Alex Gibson-Giorgio, Stephen Anderson, Jadie Bastow, Dion Bilios, Du Toit Bredenkamp, Annie Chiswell, Matt Edwards, Josh Gates, Catty Hamilton, Matthew Hamilton, Emma Hawthorne, Zoe Komazec, Sarah Kate Landy, Courtney Monsma, Clay Roberts, Leigh Sleightholme, Thalia Smith, Lisa Sontag and Zachary Webster round out the cast.
The Australian production will be directed by Helpmann Award winner Gary Young.
Mamma Mia! will play QPAC’s Lyric Theatre from Tuesday 26 December 2017; tickets go on sale on Wednesday 24 May at qpac.com.au.
