Two of Australia’s most accomplished artists are putting a fresh spin on Latin jazz and classical pieces.

Katie Noonan and Karin Schaupp are reuniting for their second LP, Songs of the Latin Skies, the follow-up to 2012’s ARIA nominated Songs of the Southern Skies.

Noonan, one of Australia’s most versatile and beloved vocalists, and Schaupp, one of the best classical guitarists of her generation, are taking on the South American songbook of bossa nova, samba, salsa and tango, interpreting the work of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Luis Bonfa, Antonio Carlos Jobim and more.

“In this, our third release together, I feel like Karin and I have made our best work yet,” Katie says.

“Playing with Karin is like floating on a gorgeous cloud — it is such a pleasure to make music together and this new selection of beautiful songs has been our most comfortable musical home yet. We can’t wait to share this music with you around the country!”

For Karin, making Songs of the Latin Skies with Katie was “pure joy”.

“Playing some of my favourite music with one of my favourite musicians who also happens to be a great friend… what could possibly be better? When you know each other so well musically and personally, you dare to make music in a very intimate way — there are no boundaries, no ice to break, and you both know when something is going to be really special; you feel it in your core, and everything flows easily,” Karin says.

“Katie and I have always had moments like that together, which is why we love working together, but this album is by far our best. It just poured out of us, and we can’t wait to let our audience into our lovely musical conversation.”

Songs of the Latin Skies is out now via Kin Music/Universal Music Australia. Katie Noonan and Karin Schaupp will play the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (114 Grey Street, South Brisbane) on Saturday 20 May; tickets are available now at
