1UP Arcade, Morningside’s new retro gaming mecca, will be opening its doors soon.

As we revealed back in March, the unique arcade will offer ‘all-you-can-eat’-style passes that will allow unlimited access to all games, which will be set to ‘freeplay’.

There are no coins and no time limits — just complete access with a one-day ($15), weekly ($29), monthly ($79) or quarterly ($129) pass.

The arcade was originally set to open in April, but the launch date has now been pushed back to Saturday 13 May.

“This short delay is going to help us ensure we hit the ground running with as many machines as possible, and that the venue itself can live up to the hype,” says owner Stephen Holmes.

“Plus, it’s no fun moving arcade machines around in the rain!”

With retro gaming at the core of the venue’s appeal, 1UP Arcade will also offer quirky snacks that take gamers straight back to the ’80s, with imported drinks like TAB, Minute Maid and Cherry Coke on rotation.

“1UP Arcade will have unlimited pass-outs, but we want gamers to be able to stay all day if they want to, which means a nice place to relax and refresh between rounds of gaming,” Holmes says.

Some of the games that have been confirmed for the launch include The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tekken, Blazing Star, Virtua Cop 2, Rave Racer, Club GTi, and a variety of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and NeoGeo titles. Dozens of cabinets are already on-site in Morningside, with plenty more to come.

Holmes says a full-time arcade mechanic is hard at work getting them ready for the grand opening.

“This will be the largest arcade of its kind in the country,” he says. “We want to live up to that responsibility in every way possible, so we’re planning some special extras for the launch event, including prizes and giveaways.”

1UP Arcade will open at 230 Lytton Road in Morningside on Saturday 13 May. To sign up for the launch event, visit 1UPArcade.com.au.
