1UP Arcade will launch in April with around 80 playable games and an innovative all-you-can-play offering.
Leave your coins and tokens at home — Morningside’s new 1UP Arcade will instead offer memberships which will allow unlimited access to all games, which will be set to ‘freeplay’.
“We want to attract players of all ages and skill levels, and that means removing all roadblocks to enjoyment,” says owner Stephen Holmes.
“Usually you have to feed a machine dollar after dollar to get enough playtime to improve — but not at 1UP.”
Unlike Fortitude Valley’s Netherworld, the popular arcade bar that opened in January, 1UP isn’t a licensed venue.
Instead, Holmes says, the focus is purely on gaming.
“1UP Arcade isn’t attached to a bar or cafe — our focus is on the games and creating a community for arcade enthusiasts to reconnect with classic gaming,” he says.
1UP Arcade will focus on authentic hardware, with arcade-grade CRT monitors in original cabinets wherever possible, in order to recreate that authentic feeling of going to a classic video game arcade in the ’80s and ’90s. Even cabinets that haven’t survived the last two or three decades will be rebuilt from original parts.
Close to 60 machines are already confirmed for the venue — from obvious staples like Street Fighter II and NBA Jam through to titles rarely seen in Australia like Garou: Mark of the Wolves — with more on the way for opening day. There’ll be something for everyone, from casual gamers to hardcore arcade aficionados.
