Brisbane City will come alive with festive cheer this month, as the city launches its free annual Christmas program, The Wonder of Christmas .
The program, which will start on Friday 27 November and run until Christmas Eve, will see over 400 free Christmas events pop up around the city for families to enjoy.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk says The Wonder of Christmas will feature the return of popular events in the City and South Bank, with fresh new twists to delight both young and old.
“For the second time, South Bank will come alive with Christmas cheer with events including the popular Christmas Markets, a pedal-powered Christmas tree and the dive-in Christmas Cinema,” he says.
“The Wonder of Christmas program is all about making sure The City and South Bank are fun-filled destinations for everyone to celebrate the festive season with a range of activities and events to appeal to everyone.”
Cr Quirk says he expects this year’s program to be much more popular than last year’s.
“Over the Christmas period, we will see thousands of families and visitors head into the CBD to shop and to enjoy the school holidays,” he says.
“Last year our Christmas program brought more than 280,000 visitors into The City and 190,000 people to South Bank and we’re anticipating this year’s attendance to be even bigger and better.”
The festive season will start with the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree in King George Square on Friday 27 November.
“Over the Christmas period we’re expecting hundreds of thousands to flock to The City to see the spectacular 20m tree which is dressed in 4km of colourful decorations and 16,000 twinkling lights,” he says.
“Residents will also be delighted with performance from Paulini and the Australia Girls Choir, who will perform popular Christmas Carols for the whole family to sing along to.
“The popular Gold Lotto City Hall Light Spectacular will return for a third year, with a brand new projection, themed around The Nutcracker’s The Land of Sweets.”
Brisbane’s favourite annual Christmas parade and pantomime will also return, with daily shows from Friday 11 December and feature camels, giant inflatable decorations, Santa and a new segment celebrating the Twelve Days of Christmas.
