River City Labs is urging women to launch their startup in 54 hours this weekend, in their first ever Startup Weekend event for women.

Held from 9 to 11 October, the Startup Weekend for women is an intense 54 hour event where a community of local entrepreneurs, business startup enthusiasts, web and software developers, designers and marketing gurus collaboratively participate in all stages of the startup process, including pitching, business model creation, coding, designing and market validation.

Following the success of River City Lab’s Startup Weekend Brisbane in June, which saw a record-number of 200 people attend the opening night, this new female-focused event is aimed at empowering, fostering and mentoring female startup companies in a collaborative environment and inspiring them to take risks and develop innovative thinking.

River City Labs’ General Manager, Peta Ellis says the program encourages women to just have a go.

“We are really excited to be launching our first startup event tailored to women. We are certainly not discouraging men’s involvement by any means – the overarching goal however is to empower women to have a go and to unleash their skills and ideas around design, development and creation in order to better facilitate their startup growth,” she says.

“It can be very daunting in a male dominated environment and we want to provide women the support to be able to give it a go, make mistakes and ask questions in a safe and friendly environment.”

The weekend event offers participants the opportunity to engage in all stages of the startup experience, from pre-pitching their own startup idea, to collaboratively working in teams to design and launch a final product, to evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of their startup with local entrepreneurial leaders.

“The participants will be surrounded by business professionals, entrepreneurs and great mentors to help them through the process,” Peta says.

“We want to see how far they can go, how far they can progress and push themselves.”

At the end of the event, an expert panel of entrepreneurial leaders will judge the final pitches, with prize packages being awarded to the standout startups.

The Startup Weekend event for women will be held from 9 to 11 October, at Blue Sky Funds on Eagle Street in Brisbane.
