Brisbane is set to welcome the Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy this month, as part of the 13th annual Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour.

Each year, the Tour celebrates the heroes and stories intrinsically linked to the Victoria Racing Club’s 154-year old Melbourne Cup race and its contribution to the nation’s historical and cultural heritage.

The trophy visits various destinations in an effort to unite communities by engaging councils, schools, hospitals, aged-care and racing groups to raise funds for local causes.

This year, Mental Illness Fellowship Queensland (MIFQ) will be the exclusive Brisbane host of the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour, welcoming the 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy with a day of celebrations on Thursday 17 September.

Coinciding with MIFQ’s 30th birthday, the event will also create an avenue to raise awareness of mental health issues in the community.

MIFQ Chief Executive Officer, Tony Stevenson says MIFQ are thrilled to be chosen as the exclusive Brisbane host.

“We invite Brisbane to join us at our community breakfast. It’s the only opportunity to get your photos taken with the Cup trophy!”

The day of celebrations will kick off at 8am with a community breakfast with a carnival theme, featuring food vans, stalls, music, horse racing inspired carnival games and even a best horse noise competition.

During the breakfast you’ll have the chance to get a photo taken with the prestigious Emirates Melbourne Cup and enter Victoria Racing Club’s #PeoplesCup Challenge on Facebook for a chance to win a trip for two to Flemington.

At 10am the trophy will leave, to engage with the local health precinct. Supporters can walk with the trophy, across to the Royal Brisbane Hospital where its magic will be shared with patients and visitors, then on to Ronald MacDonald House and Childhood Cancer Support connecting with sick children and their families who often travel from regional areas for treatment.

A corporate lunch hosted by Brisbane designer and socialite Leigh Buchanan will also be held at the Victoria Park Gold Club Ballroom from 12:30pm, as part of the celebrations. The lunch will include an auction of one-of-a-kind designer headwear and Melbourne Cup inspired experiences. All proceed will go to MIFQ.

The 2015 Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy will stop in Brisbane for one day only – Thursday 17 September. It will then travel to the Gold Coast before heading off to Victoria.
