L O V E the Ekka!
Been going since a toddler. My maternal Grandparents’ were ‘Showies’. Loved just walking around, taking in the sights, with my 6’6″ red-haired Irish Grandfather! He knew EVERYBODY in Side Show Alley, of course!
Once I a teenager, & then on to current times, first up, ALWAYS have a Toasted Ham Sandwich at Dairy Hall, with small carton of flavoured milk. Then I’m set!
I remember when the milk was in small, glass bottles, with foil tops, which were ‘popped’ with a special sharp steel instrument! I was absolutely FASCINATED as a child, how this was done!
Back in the day, the Tasmanian Potato Board Chips, yes, CHIPS, were just THE best! Used to get half a rotisseried chook, then said chips, & a can o’ Coke, & sit on the benches in the Assembly Yard, with all my ‘horsey’ mates, & watch the Equestrian Events! Those were the days, of good, clean(unless stable mucking-out!) fun!
I like walking around, & seeing all my ‘old haunts’ these days. All my friends are long gone, & I don’t know any of the ‘horse’ people anymore.
Such is time, & life.
I remember my father bringing me to the Ekka (on the train from Ipswich) to go to the Ekka
As a child it was a much anticipated event. We went to Coles cafeteria pre the Ekka and it was my great delight to walk into a store in one street, and out another.
It is well over 20 years since I have been as the children are long grown. I am expecting to have a great day and take heaps of photos.
I would have to be writing a book about my experiences at the EKKA.
I LUV it.
one story I will mention _ When my son was at high school showing cattle, I was camp mum for the group and thoroughly enjoyed staying in at the EKKA. Met many people, exchanged our recipes in our dining room, and still remain friends. Some of these people are still showing beef cattle and I am hoping to visit them this year.
