One of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most successful shows, Cats is returning to Brisbane, but you’ll need to practice patience as the season doesn’t launch until early 2016.

Following a successful season in London’s West End, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical Cats is coming to Australia for a strictly limited season.

Even though it’s opening in Sydney on October 30, it won’t be hitting Brisbane until January 2016 as part of a national tour.

For the ardent fans, the most exciting part about all this is knowing the hit revival has been reworked by the original creative team — director Trevor Nunn, choreographer and associate director Gillian Lynne, set designer John Napier and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber — and this version has received excellent reviews. So much so, it was decided to extend its season due to overwhelming demand.

Some of the changes to look out for include the introduction of a rapping ‘street cat’ in the famous Rum Tum Tugger role, who performs some serious breakdancing moves. Lloyd Webber has been quoted as saying, “I’ve come to the conclusion that having read Eliot again, maybe Eliot was the inventor of rap” when explaining this new direction of the stage show.

As many fans already know, Cats is based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and is set among a larger-than-life junkyard playground. You may be familiar with the names Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks (which are a few of the favourite feline characters).

Some interesting facts that you may not know:

  • This has been one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, after premièring at the New London Theatre in 1981 and then playing for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances.
  • Cats has been performed in over 30 countries, has been translated into 15 languages and has been seen by more than 73 million people worldwide.
  • Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings won Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album.

There is really nothing quite like it and the combination of a fantastical oversized set, an amazing score, beautiful choreography and fabulous costumes, should make for an unmissable show.

CATS will be staged at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC from January 29, 2016. Tickets go on sale on Friday April 24. For more information, check out our event guide listing.
